When You Were Small
by Sara O'Leary and Julie Morstad
Kids' Book of the Week , June 22, 2015
It's wondrous enough when a child realizes that he or she has a past—"When I was a little kid," the little kid says—but with a slight twist, this simple tale adds to the wonder. Every night, Henry's father tells him that when he was small, he was really small: small enough to wear a thimble for a hat, small enough to sleep in a slipper. Morstad's delicate and warm illustrations make it even more likely that this lovely little book, which a customer tipped me off to recently, will become its own bedtime tradition. (O'Leary and Morstad have continued to collaborate, most recently on the charming This Is Sadie.) (Age 2 to 5)
