Waves Passing in the Night: Walter Murch in the Land of the Astrophysicists
by Lawrence Weschler
New Book of the Week , February 6, 2017
Is Walter Murch a crank? That is, from one perspective, the question raised by this little book. But the flip side to that question is: Has Walter Murch, Oscar-winning editor of Apocalypse Now and The Godfather, made a fundamental discovery about our universe that professional astrophysicists have ignored? Weschler specializes in profiling brilliant, obsessive outsiders, and he makes an eloquent and enthusiastic plea for the importance of opening the scientific consensus to amateur innovators like Murch (although, as he admits, it's the same plea used by climate-change deniers and anti-vaccine activists).
