U and I

by Nicholson Baker

Old Book of the Week , September 21, 2015

Thank goodness for strange, little books. This one, almost 25 years old already (!), may not be for everyone, but if you have the smallest bit of fascination with how one writer thinks about another, you too might love this book, in which Baker, a young writer sometimes compared—not least by himself—to the great John Updike, holds up for examination his own fascination with the master the way you might look with wonderment on a large toenail you've just clipped off.
