The Story of Gilgamesh

by Yiyun Li

Kids' Book of the Week , February 27, 2017

Li is best known for her prize-winning stories and novels, and perhaps now (see above) for her memoir, but she also recently retold the oldest story in recorded literature, The Story of Gilgamesh, as part of the Pushkin Press's Save the Story series. In her hands (and I must admit I've never read the story in anyone else's), Gilgamesh is a tale of friendship, heroism, and (much like Dear Friend) death; the adventures of Gilgamesh and his best friend, Enkidu, told simply but with real emotional depth, read a little as if Frog and Toad were brave warriors with superhuman strength. (Ages 6 and up)
