The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron

by Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind

Old Book of the Week , November 3, 2014

I'm not sure if all the fiscal malfeasance that's gone unpunished since Enron spectacularly imploded back in 2001 makes The Smartest Guys in the Room seem quaintly outdated now or even more compelling. But as a story of ambition, hubris, and comeuppance (for a few), it can still hardly be matched, especially as told by the reporters—McLean in particular—who were among the first to start dismantling Enron's house of cards. A disturbing but in some ways deeply satisfying tale.
