Our talented friend Karin Snelson gave a witty talk last week at Madison Books about her current passion in her long career in kids' books: translating them. Among her books under discussion (along with At the Drop of a Cat, which was just named to the NYT's Best Illustrated Books of 2023 list) were these two fun, and very different, new releases. 101 Ways to Read a Book is a charming taxonomy of rabid readers ("The Happy Hermit," "The Turtle," "The Snoop"—I think I'm "The Pirate"), while The Magicians is a deliriously gorgeous epic adventure about three magicians released from spells of imprisonment and then pursued across time and space. Either book—The Magicians especially!—would make a brilliant gift for an inquisitive kid or grown-up.
