The Lights and Types of Ships at Night
by Dave Eggers and Annie Dills
Those former and current bedtime-readers among you likely are aware how difficult it can be to turn a much-loved fact book (e.g., in our house's case, the DK volume on Airplanes) into an enjoyable bedtime story. One of the beauties of this recent picture book is that Eggers has turned a fact book on ships—trawlers, junks, galleons, etc.—into a witty readaloud. The other beauty is, well, how beautiful it is, as illustrator Annie Dills has managed to back up, in shimmering glory, Eggers's typically grandiose assertion that "there is nothing more beautiful than a ship and its lights on the sea at night." (Ages 2 to 6)
