The Hierarchies of Cuckoldry and Bankruptcy
by Charles Fourier
Old Book of the Week , August 3, 2015
This might be the funniest—or the truest—book in the store. Fourier, you may recall, was the French utopian socialist from your economics classes who influenced Marx and predicted the seas would someday be filled with lemonade. He also, apparently, was a brilliant (and very organized) satirist: his taxonomy of eighty varieties of cuckold (the Disabused, Dumbfounded Cuckold, the Irate Cuckold) and thirty-six kinds of bankruptcy (the Sneaking Bankruptcy, the Blissful Bankruptcy) make a hilarious catalogue of human nature (or at least 19th-century French nature) and, for any working novelists among you, a wonderful sourcebook of nearly everything that can go wrong in love and finance.
