The Awkward Thoughts of W. Kamau Bell
by W. Kamau Bell
Audiobook of the Week , June 12, 2017
I am learning: a comedian reading their own audiobook is a good way to go. (Eddie Izzard next?) But W. Kamau Bell is not your average comedian, and his Awkward Thoughts is not your average comedian's book. There's not a punch line in every paragraph; sometimes there isn't one on a whole page. Bell is funny, but the laughs seem almost secondary: he's most interested in being awkward (in the best way), by putting himself, and us, in uncomfortable situations and talking his way calmly through them, whether it's finding his way as a "Blerd" (a black nerd), breaking into open-mic comedy, or confronting his own sexism. It's like spending time with your most thoughtful, reasonable, and challenging friend. —Tom
