The 100 Most Jewish Foods

by Alana Newhouse

New Book of the Week , April 29, 2019

In our mixed household, the Jewishness of certain foods (and other items) is a subject of frequent debate. Noodle kugel? Obviously. Marshmallows? Apparently not. (I'm not the expert.) In this fun and useful compendium, Alana Newhouse and her contributors (which include such titans as Ruth Reichl, Joan Nathan, and Yotam Ottolenghi as well appreciative Gentiles like Ian Frazier and Edward Lee) hit just the right note with celebrations of classic Jewish cuisine like chopped liver and hamantaschen as well as cultural quirks like "sugar cereals for Shabbos morning" (no cooking on the Sabbath meant Froot Loops for some Orthodox kids). With equal parts laughs, nostalgia, and actual recipes, you won't know whether to keep it in your kitchen or on your coffee table.
