Red: A Crayon's Story
by Michael Hall
I Don't Want to Be a Frog
by Dev Petty and Mike Boldt
You are what you are. Or are you? I sat down with these two appealing new picture books to choose one to feature here this week, and immediately laughed out loud at how similar they are: a little frog who wants to be a rabbit, a pig—anything but a frog—and a red crayon who might actually be blue. A dissertation could probably be written about the subtle differences in identity formation between them, but for your young readers just a few things will likely matter: the books are funny and bright, and they will set them thinking about what it means to be who you are.
