Pioneer Girl: An Annotated Autobiography

by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Old and New Book of the Week , January 26, 2015

Before there was a Little House on the Prairie, or any other of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books, there was Pioneer Girl, an autobiography she wrote in her early sixties but never published, although she drew on it to create the novels that later made her famous. Now it's finally appeared, in a beautiful edition by the South Dakota Historical Society with annotations about Wilder's fascinating life that are so thorough they almost make a biography of their own. The small publisher is still struggling to keep up with the unexpected demand for their project, but we were able to get a handful of the books in the store, and they are lovely indeed. We may take them home if you don't first.
