Hero of the Empire: The Boer War, a Daring Escape, and the Making of Winston Churchill
by Candice Millard
Audio Book of the Week , October 17, 2016
So many customers have raved to me about Millard's previous histories, The River of Doubt and Destiny of the Republic, that I had to try her new one, about one of Churchill's early imperial adventures. And how glad I am that I've done it via the voice of Simon Vance, who modulates with subtle precision into a superb Churchillian rumble when quoting Winston himself, as Millard of course does throughout to great effect. Around his unabashedly brash character she constructs a briskly dramatic story that is both critical and appreciative of its irrepressible subject and that captures a formative moment in his life as well as in the histories of modern war and the proto-apartheid state. —Tom
