Ballet

by Alexey Brodovitch

Old Book of the Week , January 2, 2018

An aside in the new Robert Frank biography led me to this item, a reprint in the Books on Books series of a landmark 1945 photo book, the only one the legendary Brodovitch (editor and mentor to Frank and many others) published during his lifetime. With its blurred and over- or underexposed images—flawed by any usual photographic measures, especially those of the time—Ballet captures movement and expression, both the dancers' and the camera's, in a way that gives the pages the sensation of taking a breathtaking dance of their own.
