A Fortunate Man: The Story of a Country Doctor

by John Berger and Jean Mohr

When Berger died in January, I realized I had never read any of his many books, but in all the accounts of his work, including his celebrated art criticism and fiction, this lesser-known book from 1967 was the most intriguing to me. And it lived up to every hope. Berger's profile of the Gloucestershire physician John Sassall, accompanied by Mohr's evocative photographs, is not merely a portrait of a tireless healer on his traditional rounds: it's a thoughtful, gracefully theoretical examination of his work, his ambition, and his place that only increases your admiration for this humble but powerful person.
